Ancient Charm Renewed with Splendor: Fish Lanterns Illuminate Gusu | The Revitalized Yulangqiaobang in Gusu Makes Its Debut

Release Date: 2025-03-08

On the evening of March 6th, within the Gusu Yulangqiaobang Park, over a hundred traditional intangible cultural heritage fish lanterns were suddenly illuminated. Their radiant glow traversed millennia, infusing this cultural and creative park—reborn from the former Suzhou No. 3 Pharmaceutical Factory—with a new cultural soul. At the fish lantern lighting ceremony, guests jointly initiated the event by holding lanterns, announcing the official naming of "Gusu Yulangqiaobang" and unveiling a new positioning centered on "Cultural Innovation Center + Hanfu Photography Live Streaming Base + Pet-Friendly Community + Z-Generation Trendy District", setting sail to paint a new vision of integrated culture, commerce, and tourism in Gusu.

Originally named DoBe WE@GUSU (International Art & Culture Workshop, International Art & Culture Center), Gusu Yulangqiaobang was the first cultural and creative park operated by DoBe Group in Suzhou in 2017, transitioning to a culture-commerce-tourism model in 2024. Located at No. 16 Yulangqiaobang in Gusu District, the park is adjacent to the Humble Administrator's Garden and Suzhou Museum, belonging to the Pingjiang Historical and Cultural District and the Humble Administrator's Garden business district.

The park's design fully respects the traditional Suzhou-style garden layout, preserving historical memories and traces while maintaining overall artistic integrity. By the water's edge, stacked rocks evoke the flowing-stream wine-drinking poetic tradition, while dark tiles and upturned eaves blend with steel structures and glass to forge a new Suzhou-style architectural vocabulary. It preserves the garden essence of "scenery changing with every step", yet employs contemporary techniques such as floating staircases and translucent concrete to create international visual tension. Above this foundation of Eastern garden art, the space accommodates creative offices and cultural tourism commerce.

Accompanied by a cheerful rendition of "The Song of Peach Blossom Nunnery", young actors from the Taohuawu Theater, dressed as the Four Great Talents of Jiangnan, performed an impressive flash mob dance. As the highlight of the ceremony, the intangible cultural heritage fish lantern display perfectly blends with the local culture of Gusu's Yulangqiaobang, embodying the auspicious meanings and blessings of "family prosperity", "abundance year after year", and "a fish leaping over the dragon gate". Each fish lantern appears elegantly simple like a Song Dynasty painting by day and dazzlingly vibrant like a starry sky by night within the glass boxes. Amidst the shimmering water-pattern lights and wave-like drapes, the fish lanterns seem to drift through the transparent glass boxes, constructing an immersive Eastern aesthetic theater—a brilliant footnote to the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures.

The lantern procession meandered like a galaxy, with over a dozen elegantly dressed lantern bearers complementing the "Light Chasers" group formed by Hanfu enthusiasts. The grand lantern parade wound through Yulangqiaobang and Fohui Temple, recreating the classical imagery of "fish swimming among lotus leaves"; passed through preserved machinery in the renovated pharmaceutical factory, symbolizing the rebirth of industrial heritage; and traversed a panoramic glass box, creating a surreal dialogue between traditional aesthetics and modern space.

Yulangqiaobang in Gusu, the heart of the ancient city, is building a "15-minute cultural tourism ecosystem". Metro Line 6 connects the Humble Administrator's Garden and Suzhou Museum, while the 9029 "Intangible Cultural Heritage Special Line" leads directly to Shantang Street. Pingjiang Road is within walking distance, and Suzhou Station is just a 10-minute drive away. The park features diverse commercial formats and industrial clustering: the Qu Art Museum builds an artistic gravitational field, the Crawling Universe reptile studio breaks barriers in the reptile-pet economy for the solo urbanite, Hanfu brand clusters like "72 Photography" and "Sweet Makeup Styling" create a Chinese trend-focused traffic pool, while Internet-famous spaces such as Lushi Coffee and Pinzhe reshape consumption scenarios. Over 30 cultural, technological and creative enterprises, including Guangguan Culture, Hosun, and Qianhou Technology, form a creative central axis. Brands like Moloney Fireplace, IVAN C. DESIGN LIMITED, and P.P.TREE interpret new paradigms of "Design Gusu".

This is not merely a simple rebranding or repositioning, but a reshaping and encoding of cultural DNA. Yulangqiaobang (Fisherman's Bridge Canal) embodies the Eastern philosophy of "symbiosis between fish and water", inheriting the literati sentiment of "reclusive fishing" while deconstructing Generation Z's social code of "slacking off", giving new life to traditional culture through deconstruction.

As the last fish-shaped lantern disappears into the dark sky, this quantum entanglement between tradition and modernity continues to evolve. The renewal of Gusu's Yulangqiaobang transcends mere physical space iteration; it activates a cultural algorithm for historic urban regeneration. Using fish lanterns as a medium, it fosters symbiosis between industrial memory and intangible heritage craftsmanship, creates resonance between literati spirit and metaverse thinking, and ultimately scripts a new paradigm for garden-style integrated spaces of culture, tourism, and commerce within the ancient city through continuous decoding and reconstructing.
